Armchair prospecting: online services offer plans and specs without fighting traffic
Information is power, or at least a competitive advantage. Now, two big players in the construction information business have unveiled subscription, online tools to help producers keep track of prospective projects.
A few years ago, computer hardware was one big data bottleneck and interconnectivity was another. But hardware capabilities have skyrocketed while the price has dropped, basically removing that roadblock. And as Internet use has mushroomed, getting connected has grown easier and more affordable, becoming a necessity in business.
Taking advantage of these changes, online information providers McGraw Hill and Reed Construction Data offer plans, specs, and bid information based on dedicated Web sites that are loaded with information. Both provide producers key data about planned, current, and future projects, and both offer free trial subscriptions. Like any tool, though, your best bet is to try out the software and see what it can do for you.
The McGraw Hill Construction Network at /network/uses the company's Dodge Projects report numbers for its underlying structure, although users also can search by keywords. Data is continually updated as projects progress from pre-design through bidding and construction.
Producers can set up searches based on various parameters, such as area, type of project, the current stage of a project, and ownership type. Another nice feature is the ability to receive daily updated project information by e-mail.
